Montrose, Colorado has seen a lot of growth recently; The Montrose Water Sports Park formed in 2015, not even two years later the opening of the new Community Rec Center, and then just a year later, the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Mayfly Outdoors Building and Ross Reels. Now Montrose is getting ready to open another great facility, The Montrose County Event Center. A project that had been on the shelf for 20 years or so finally took shape. The idea for an arena venue has been considered since the ’90s, and now the new event center is planning to open its doors in late April!
In the summer of 2016, The Montrose County Event Center broke ground. This arena is being built on county property just east of the current Montrose County Fairgrounds. The current fairgrounds can no longer accommodate the demand for both indoor and outdoor events. The county has seen a 60 percent increase in outdoor events in the last seven years, and the current indoor space known as “The Friendship Hall” is booked a year in advance. The current space at The Montrose County Fairgrounds has become much too small. The indoor hall is about 17,500 sq ft with a capacity of 1,800 people, and the outdoor arena is 34,000 sq ft with stands that can hold only 1,500 people. The new Montrose County Event Center will be a two-story building, and will have a multi functional space on the main floor, and an area on the second level, with a 1,000-space parking lot. The new building has an indoor arena over 93,000 sq ft, with a big portion of that being dirt area that can accommodate a variety of events. The new indoor space will have a capacity of around 6,000 people. This over 93,000 sq ft indoor arena will have three 900 sq ft meeting rooms with kitchen facilities, and a 5,400 sq ft banquet hall. The new building is providing a great deal of space for many opportunities.
The new indoor arena will be an economic driver for the city. With more space available bigger events can be held, and more spectators will be drawn in. The estimated budget for the event center was $5 million to $8 million, the county budgeted approximately a total of $5 million for construction in the years of 2016 and 2017, and received a $1 million DOLA (Department of Local Affairs) grant. The county also received $50,000 from The City of Montrose for geo-technical surveys. Although this is a multi-million dollar facility, the county projects that across a 10-year period, the event center could have a $42 million net benefit to the community. Events the facility would attract to Montrose could generate new tax revenue.
With all this new space, the event center plans to host a variety of events. The center projects to still host many horse and rodeo events, but the new facility opens many opportunities. Events ideal to host at the new center can include; sporting events & competitions, equine events, animal and livestock shows, business meetings & educational training, automotive & motorcycle shows, expos & festivals, concerts & ticketed performances, charity & fundraising events, and private parties. The event grounds are equipped with RV electrical hookups, an outdoor arena, an exhibit hall, horse stalls, and livestock barns. The new building allows for larger events, and a variety of new events to be brought to the Montrose, CO area.
