Destinations and Attractions Part 2

It’s warmed up outside, and adventure, excitement, and entertainment are surrounding us. There is always something to do around this small town, no matter the season, but spring and summer are great seasons to enjoy the outdoors. We are lucky to live in such a beautiful place full of adventure here on the Western Slope of Colorado. As promised, I’m going to tell you about some more of the amazing destinations and attractions in the Montrose, CO area.

1.Astronomy

In my last blog about things to do in the area I talk about the breathe taking scenic treasure, The Black Canyon National Park. In 2015 the park was the first in Colorado to become certified as an International Dark Sky Park, there are only nine of these in the entire nation. This destination is full of adventure, and has now added another exciting attraction. This summer the park is offering The “2018 Black Canyon Astronomy Festival” in June. With the park having the honor of being a Dark Sky Park, it allows sky-watchers to admire constellations and planets with plenty of detail. On June 13-16 there will be various unique astronomy and solar programs, Sky Rangers, and local astronomers. There will be events presented by special speakers and volunteers to showcase the dark night skies at The Black Canyon National Park. The Festival isn’t the only opportunity to use the Dark Sky Park. The park offers star-gazing activities throughout the year such as; full-moon hikes led by rangers, winter full-moon snowshoeing treks, astronomy observation programs, and constellation tours.

2.Ridgway State Park

This park is great for the whole family. Just a short 15-20 min drive from Montrose, Ridgway State Park, offers; fishing, boating, paddle boarding, swimming, and camping all centered on the beautiful Ridgway Reservoir. The park is also known for great wildlife and wildflower viewing, hiking or biking, and many opportunities to capture great photography, all this can be done while enjoying the beautiful views of the San Juan Mountains. Memories are sure to be made during any season at this exciting park.

3.Morrow Point Boat Tour

The Morrow Point Boat Tour will begin with a short historic, and scenic hike down to the The Pine Creek Boat Dock, and then you will get a short safety presentation before you board the boat. This is an hour and half long pontoon boat tour that takes you on a scenic journey along the beginning of The Black Canyon National Park, on the upper side of Morrow Point Reservoir. You will learn about the history, geology, and ecology of the area. Tours will be available Wednesday-Monday, with 10:00 am and 12:30 pm departures starting in early June, and go until early September. Don’t miss your chance to enjoy this beautiful tour, and learn about this amazing area.
